Murdock Awards $300,000 Shoshone Grant!
The Trustees of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust of
Vancouver,
Washington granted our $300,000 request to them for the once-in-forever opportunity to purchase Shoshone Base Camp from the
U.S. government.
Ten years ago, in 1998, Lutherhaven Ministries accepted a Special Use Permit from the Idaho Panhandle National Forests to operate Shoshone Base Camp, a US Forest Service training center on the North Fork of the
Coeur d'Alene
River at Shoshone Creek.
Shoshone has developed into a vital outdoor recreation, environmental education, community outreach and servant leadership training center for Lutherhaven Ministries.
This summer, nearly 700 high school youth from across the nation traveled to Shoshone for one of our new Idaho Servant Adventures, using the camp as their base for service and outreach opportunities to various underserved people and communities of the
Silver
Valley.
Altogether these dedicated young adults gave more than 11,000 hours of service to our neighbors!
Now, after six years of work with our congressional delegation and two separate bills signed into law, Lutherhaven Ministries has the unprecedented opportunity to purchase Shoshone from the federal government: 35 scenic acres and 13 buildings in a beautiful mountain retreat setting for $705,000. The closing date is November 18.
The purchase of Shoshone Base Camp is truly a gift from God!
With the Murdock grant, we have almost $616,000 of the purchase amount in hand or pledged. The Murdock grant joins funds from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation, the Inland Northwest Community Foundation, from individual and corporate donors and pledges, and $18,000 in interest income.
The Murdock pledge is a top-off grant, meaning we must have the remaining $89,000 raised or pledged in order to receive their gift toward this remarkable purchase opportunity!
Contact Executive Director Bob Baker to find out how you can give to this awesome endeavor, as together we prepare Shoshone for generations of campers to come!
